Fast forward to the early 1900s, and this French designer Paul Poiret decided to bring them to Western fashion. He called them "harem skirts" or "jupe-culotte," pulling inspo from Turkish şalvar pants. Obviously, people lost their minds because (hello, 1900s) women were still in corsets and long skirts. So yeah, it was controversial.
Now in 2026? They're back and better than ever. Chloé put them on the runway with lace tops, Alaïa made like five different versions, and suddenly every fashion girl is wearing them. They went from "backpacker vibes" to "I know what I'm doing and I look good."
The vibe now is way more polished. Silk versions, asymmetric cuts, even denim. They're not just for music festivals anymore (though they still totally work there too).
