How to Style Baggy Jorts

So back in April I bought my first pair of baggy jorts at a thrift store in like fifteen minutes flat, no trying on, just vibes. Got home, put them on with the first t-shirt I grabbed off my chair, looked in the mirror and just... stood there. I looked like a cardboard box had feet. Took the photo anyway, deleted it four seconds later, and texted my friend "I think I wasted $12."
I did not waste $12. I just didn't know yet that baggy jorts are one of those pieces that either look amazing or look like a costume, and the difference is almost entirely about what you put on top and what's on your feet. Nobody tells you this part. So here's everything I've actually figured out since that mirror moment, keyword-stuffed nonsense aside.
Why I Keep Reaching for These Over My Jeans Now
I used to think jorts were a July-only, festival-only kind of item. Then I saw someone on my feed in October wearing black baggy jorts with an oversized hoodie and combat boots and it broke my brain a little, in a good way. Turns out the whole silhouette has quietly stopped being "one season, one vibe" and started showing up everywhere — dressed up with a blazer, roughed up with grunge pieces, thrown on with basically nothing thought out at all and still working. I'm not saying I planned to wear mine past September. I just haven't stopped.
The One Rule That Actually Fixed My Cardboard Box Problem
Break the volume. If the shorts are big, something else needs to be fitted or short — a cropped top, a tucked shirt, anything that gives your waist back to you. Big top plus big shorts is how I ended up looking like packaging. Fitted top plus big shorts is how the exact same shorts started looking, weirdly, expensive.
Show a wrist or an ankle. I didn't believe this one until I tried it. Rolling my sleeves up or letting my ankle show above my shoes does something to the whole outfit that I genuinely can't explain with logic. It just reads as "on purpose" instead of "I got dressed in the dark."
Tuck something, even a little. Half-tuck, front-tuck, whatever. It takes four seconds and does more for your silhouette than any amount of overthinking the top itself.
The 12 Tops I Actually Wear With Mine (Shoes Included)
1. Fitted Crop Tops
My go-to on days I can't be bothered to think. A snug crop top shows a sliver of skin at the waist and instantly fixes the volume problem — this is the fit I wore the second time I tried the jorts on, and it's the one that finally worked. Retro sneakers and crew socks, every single time.
2. Oversized T-Shirts
Oversized t-shirts are another great option for styling baggy jorts.
My errands-and-coffee outfit. Front-tuck it if you want some shape, leave it loose if you genuinely do not care today — both are correct. Chunky sneakers or slides, whichever's by the door.
3. Flowy Blouses
The day I actually want to look like I have my life together, I reach for something silky. Tuck it in for shape, let it hang loose if you want breezy. Either way it's this nice contrast against the heavy denim that photographs better than it has any right to. Strappy heels, small jewelry, done.
4. Button-Up Shirts
An oversized button-down worn open over a fitted tank might be the most-repeated outfit in my closet right now. Tie it at the waist if you want it more fitted, leave it open if you're layering. Loafers and a crossbody bag make it feel like I planned this outfit more than a minute in advance.
Opt for patterns like stripes or checks, or go for a crisp white shirt for a clean and timeless appeal.
5. Statement Tees
For when I want the shirt to actually say something. A graphic tee with everything else kept simple — thin leather belt, gold hoops, retro sneakers — reads intentional instead of thrown-together, even though "thrown-together" is usually exactly what happened.
6. Off-the-Shoulder Tops
Good trick if your shorts run wide — it pulls the eye up to your shoulders instead of down to all that fabric. Floral or ruffled fabric leans romantic. Kitten-heel slides, most days.
7. Sporty Tank Tops
For the days I say I'm "going to move my body" and then mostly just walk to get coffee. Racerback tank, moisture-wicking if it's hot, trail sneakers and visible crew socks. It looks intentional even if the workout part didn't happen.
8. Button-Front Crop Tops
Slightly more "I tried" than a plain tee without actually trying harder. The buttons pull focus to your waist, which matters a lot with high-waisted jorts. Platform sandals with this one, for reasons I couldn't tell you except that it looks right.
9. Boho-Chic Blouses
Lace or embroidery softens all that stiff denim in a way I didn't expect. This is my pick on days I feel more romantic than edgy, which — honestly, depends on the week. Beaded jewelry, leather sandals.
10. Denim Jackets
Double denim is a classic, but only if the washes don't match — otherwise you just look like one big piece of fabric. Different shade jacket, crop top or tee underneath, a bag with some personality. Minimalist flats for me here.
To create a stylish and coordinated denim-on-denim look like what I talk about in 5 Double Denim Rules You Need To Master, pair your baggy jorts with a denim jacket.
11. Graphic Sweatshirts
My cold-weather uniform, and probably the most comfortable thing on this entire list. A sweatshirt with some kind of print, chunky boots to balance out all the volume top and bottom. I have worn this exact combination more times than I'm willing to count.
12. Blazers
This one surprised me the most, and I still can't fully explain why it works. A tailored blazer over baggy jorts sounds like it shouldn't, but the structure up top just makes the looseness below look deliberate. Sneakers keeps it casual, pointed heels turns the exact same outfit into something you could wear to an actual meeting.
Alternatively, dress it up with a slim-fit top and heels. This unexpected combination is perfect for those looking to add some edge to their summer wardrobe while still looking polished and put together.
