I’ve been to too many state fairs. Some were great. Some were disasters because of what I wore. There’s nothing worse than cute shoes that start hating you by hour three, or standing there freezing at 8 p.m. while everyone else had the sense to bring a layer.  

I’m done learning this the hard way.

1. What to Wear to a State Fair: Comfort First

I want the photos too. Of course I do. But if my feet are screaming and I’m cold, the outfit is dead. You’re walking for hours. That’s it.  

A. Opt for loose-fitting clothes: 

Loose-fitting clothes are non-negotiable. Cotton tees that actually move. Jeans that already know my body. I once wore something fitted and spent the whole afternoon feeling like a stuffed sausage while trying to eat a corn dog. Never again.  

B. Layering is your friend:

Layering saved me last year. I thought it was warm enough. Sun went down and I was basically vibrating. Now I start with a tee and either tie a flannel around my waist or shove it in my bag. The weather does whatever it wants.  

My friend in North Carolina went to their fair last fall. Hot as hell when the sun was out, freezing the second it dropped. She texted me at 7 p.m. saying she was jealous of everyone who brought a jacket. Layers. That’s the whole answer.

Jeans + Graphic Tee + Sneakers

This is my default when I don’t want to think. Broken-in jeans, a tee with some attitude, sneakers that already know the pavement. I can walk all day, sit on a curb to eat, and still look like I showed up on purpose.

Denim Shorts + Tank Top

When it’s actually hot. High-waisted so I don’t have to keep pulling them up. Tank that doesn’t ride up when I’m reaching for something fried. I threw this on last year in Minnesota and only added the flannel after the sun dropped.

Casual Dress + Sneakers

Yes, a dress. But the kind that moves with me, not against me. Nothing maxi, nothing that catches on rides. Pair it with real sneakers and it somehow still works for the animal barns and the midway.

Plaid Shirt + Jeans + Boots

The one I reach for when I want that fair feeling without looking like I’m in costume. Shirt open or tied, jeans that can take dirt, boots that are already broken in. My dad always wears a version of this and somehow never looks like he’s trying.

Wide-Leg Pants + Tee

When I want more coverage but still need air. Wide legs that don’t stick when it’s humid. Simple tee. I wore this the day I knew I’d be in the livestock barns and didn’t want to care about stains.

Denim Jacket + Casual Pants

Jacket for the temperature drop that always comes. Pants that aren’t jeans if I’m sick of denim. The jacket gets tied around my waist half the day and still looks better than carrying it.

Shorts + Lightweight Layer

Shorts for the heat, something light to throw on when the air changes. I learned this from my friend who went to the Raleigh fair and spent half the night freezing in just a tank. Never again.

3. Best Shoes to Wear to a State Fair

Flip-flops are a trap. I wore them once. Huge mistake. My feet were done by 2 p.m. and I still had half the fair left.  

Closed-toe. Sneakers. Broken-in ones. My Nike runners have carried me through three fairs now. Arch support is not optional when you’re standing in line for everything.  

Y'all, I'm not even kidding - good arch support is like finding gold. I'm totally obsessed with my Nike runners for fair days, but honestly, any comfy sneakers will do. Just make sure they're well broken-in!

4.  Best Bags for a State Fair

Hands free. That’s the rule. You’re eating fried things and trying to win ring toss.  

Crossbody is my go-to. Small, stays put, holds the essentials.  

5. Making it Cute (Because We Still Want Those Pics!)

Comfort doesn’t mean boring.  

High-waisted shorts or jeans + graphic tee + flannel at the waist is my default. Looks like I thought about it for ten minutes, which is exactly how long I thought about it.  

Layered necklaces or a scarf if I’m feeling it. Nothing precious. Nothing that can fly off on a ride.

Country vibe works if you want it. Oversized plaid shirt, well-worn jeans, ankle boots that are already broken in. Looks like you belong without looking like a costume.  

6. State Fair Accessories You’ll Actually Use

Mini portable fan or misting spray on the really hot days. Sounds extra until you’re stuck in a 40-minute line and the person next to you is suffering.

I’ve seen all four seasons in one day at a fair.

Hot and sunny: wide-brim hat, sunglasses, moisture-wicking fabric. Cotton just stays wet and gross once you start sweating in those lines.

Rain: skip the giant umbrella. It’s a pain. Lightweight rain jacket lives in my bag now. Saved more days than I can count.

Evening drop: even when it’s scorching at noon, it gets cold fast. Light sweater or jacket. I still tie mine around my waist when it’s warm. Looks intentional enough.

My sister went to the Minnesota fair this year on a day that started at 80 and ended in the 50s. She wore a tank and almost left early. Next time she’s bringing the flannel.

8. What to Wear Based on State Fair Activities

Rides: no flowy maxi dresses, no dangly earrings, no scarves that can catch. I learned that the hard way when my favorite light scarf almost became someone else’s souvenir.  

Animal barns: your clothes will get dirty. That’s part of it. Wear stuff you can wash and won’t cry over. Heavy denim and polyester forgive a lot. Closed-toe shoes are basically required there anyway.  

My dad always says the same thing before we go: “Wear the old stuff. You’re gonna get grease on it.” He’s right every single time.
