Teacher Fuel: What's on My Breakfast Plate (or Not!)
09 April
Hey everyone! So, I was scrolling through this forum the other day, and someone asked a question that totally hit home: What do you eat for breakfast? As a teacher, my mornings are, well, let's just say they're a whirlwind. I'm usually up way before the sun – think 5:45 AM – and honestly, the thought of fitting in a proper breakfast feels like a luxury I just can't afford most days.

"Nothing, usually" – Yep, Been There!
Seriously, that comment resonated so hard with me. More often than not, my breakfast is… nada. Zilch. Zero. I just can't seem to squeeze it in between hitting snooze a few too many times and rushing to get out the door.
Dinner is the New Breakfast?
Then there was this one: "I don't eat until dinner. It turns out the best diet I've ever stuck to was to just wake up late and stay busy at work." Okay, maybe I don't wait that long, but there are definitely days when lunch feels like a distant dream. You know how it is – one thing leads to another, and suddenly it's 3 PM and you realize you've been running on fumes and maybe that half-eaten student's sandwich crust.
The Teacher Slim-Down is Real
Someone else commented, "Literally, I’ve slimmed down a lot since I started teaching." And you know what? Same here! I think it's a combination of the constant running around and, yeah, probably skipping meals. It's not exactly a weight-loss strategy I'd recommend, but it's a thing, right? Another teacher chimed in about losing 20 pounds their first year – makes you wonder if "Teacher Diet" should be a thing!
Coffee: My Liquid Breakfast (Don't Judge!)
"No breakfast or lunch for me. One coffee. Then a big dinner." Okay, this one is dangerously close to my reality on some days. I'm not gonna lie, coffee is my lifeline in the morning. It's not ideal, I know, but sometimes it's all I can manage before diving into a day of energetic students and endless tasks.
The Quick Grab: Milk and a Banana
But hey, it's not all doom and gloom on the breakfast front. Some days, I actually manage to grab something. "Milk and a banana everyday. I grab a carton of milk from the cafeteria. Simple. Easy. Tasty." This is my go-to when I'm trying to be a little healthier and have an extra minute. Can't go wrong with that classic combo, right?
Overnight Oats to the Rescue (Sometimes!)
"Overnight oats, or a smoothie if I have time in the AM." Ah, the elusive "if I have time"! I've tried the overnight oats thing. It's actually pretty genius – you prep it the night before, and boom, breakfast is ready in the fridge. Smoothies are great too, but honestly, sometimes the effort of getting the blender out feels like climbing a mountain at 6 AM.
My Kids Get It: "Daddy Eats Coffee for Breakfast"
This one made me chuckle: "My actual children say, “daddy eats coffee for breakfast” and they are correct." I can totally see my (future?) kids saying that about me! It's funny because it's true for so many of us, isn't it?
Cereal in a Cup? Desperate Times, Desperate Measures!
"I eat cereal out of a cup in the car on the way to work & a banana while I take morning attendance." Now that's multitasking! I haven't quite reached the cereal-in-a-cup level, but I've definitely eaten a granola bar while walking to my classroom. You gotta do what you gotta do!
Sunday Prep for the Win (Usually)
"I make make overnight oats for the week on Sunday. Then I grab one and microwave it for a minute before I leave and eat at red lights, or just heat it up when I get to school." This teacher has their life together! Meal prepping is something I aspire to. I've tried the overnight oats prep – it works wonders when I actually remember to do it. They even mentioned just oats, milk (or water), and dried fruit – simple and effective!
The Backup Plan: Coffee and Crackers
"Sometimes I forget to make it or grab it, so then my breakfast is just coffee, and belvita crackers when I get to work, if I remember/ have time." Okay, this is my emergency plan on repeat! Coffee is a given, and those Belvita crackers? They're like the teacher's secret weapon against morning hunger pangs. The Costco-sized box is a must!
Oats Overnight: A Solid Strategy
"Oats overnight. Make them the night before and grab them from the fridge on my way out the door. My drive is just long enough for me to finish my oats..." See? More love for overnight oats! It really does seem like a winner for busy teachers.
So, What's the Deal with Teacher Breakfast?
It seems like the common thread here is that we're all juggling a million things in the morning, and breakfast often takes a backseat. Time is our biggest constraint, and we're all trying to find quick, easy, and (ideally) healthy ways to fuel ourselves for a demanding day. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we just grab a coffee and hope for the best!
